Located at 1,237 m a.s.l., Ortisei boasts a total of some 4,800 inhabitants. The hinterland comprises also Roncadizza, Oltretorrente and Bulla, which despite of being part of the municipality of Castelrotto, belong to Ortisei from a cultural, geographical and linguistic viewpoint.
Ortisei has got much to offer to its guests: as trade and administrative centre for the valley, it boasts a large number of leisure time and shopping facilities. Also arts and culture have always had an important role to play, as Ortisei is the place of work of a considerable number of wood carvers known beyond borders. Also mountain film pioneer Luis Trenker, pop music star Giorgio Moroder and the successful winter sports athletes Isolde and Carolina Kostner come from this village.
The real highlight of Ortisei are undoubtedly its mountains: in the north the village is flanked by the Rasciesa which can be reached by a state-of-the-art lift facility, further in the east the Seceda, reachable via a funicular, as well as in the south the Alpe di Siusi, Monte Piz and Col de Mesdí. A gondola cableway makes the great alpine pastures accessible. The mountains soaring along both sides of the valley are protected and belong to the Puez-Odle and Sciliar-Catinaccio nature parks.
