Walk on the Val Gardena Railway Trail

The Val Gardena Railway Trail follows an old railway track that connected the villages of Ortisei and Santa Cristina in the Val Gardena

The train of the Val Gardena was built by the Austro-Hungarian monarchy in record time. It was in service from 1916 to 1960, for a total of 44 years. The wagons carried war items from Chiusa to Plan. The railway track was built between September 1915 and February 1916 by 6,000 Russian war prisoners and the train entered into service immediately.

The route starts near Via Cisles in Santa Cristina and follows a 3.5-km long stretch paralleling the still visible railway track to Ortisei. Along the panoramic path were installed different information panels telling about the history and showing pictures of the railway.

The path was set up to avoid that the so-called "Grödner Bahnl", one of the most important achievements in the history of the valley, would be forgotten.
