Winter hike via the Rasciesa to the Brogles Hut

A tip for winter and snowshoe hikes in the snowy solitude between the Val di Funes and Val Gardena valleys

From Ortisei, the funicular ascends to the Rasciesa High Alp that separates the northern side of the western Val Gardena from the Val di Funes. This table-like mountain, which seems rather inconspicuous compared to the imposing Dolomites, is a special experience, particularly in winter.

Here, tranquillity reigns far from the bustle of the ski resorts. A hike through the Swiss pine forests and across the snowfields above the tree line is a pure nature experience. The top station of the funicular is the starting point of our winter hike. The route follows trail number 35 eastwards towards the Brogles Hut. Passing the "Cason", the path descends slightly through the Swiss pine forest and then continues across the snow-covered inner Rasciesa pastures.

With no significant change in altitude, the route approaches the turn-off for the path to Furnes. From here, we can already see the Brogles Hut below the majestic Odle. We covered the five kilometres, at an altitude of between 2,000 and 2,200 metres, in less than two hours. Despite it being high season, we only encountered a few other hikers. Instead, we enjoyed the silence, broken only by the chirping of birds.

Note: The Brogles Hut is closed in winter, so it is best to take food and drink with you in your rucksack. The Rasciesa Mountain Hut, by the funicular station, is open, however.
