World’s largest hand-carved nativity scene

In the Iman sports centre in Santa Cristina is a larger-than-life nativity scene by woodcarvers from the Val Gardena

In 1988, a group of young artisans from Santa Cristina Valgardena launched an initiative to better promote Val Gardena wood carving and raise awareness of the wood sculptor profession. First, they created a larger-than-life sower from fine Swiss pine wood, after which they decided to create a larger-than-life nativity scene. The Virgin Mary and Child was the first figure to be made.

It was set up in the church during Advent and created a contemplative atmosphere. Gradually, Saint Joseph, the Three Wise Men, a shepherd, a donkey, a camel and three sheep were also carved, both in workshops and during various public demonstrations.

The 18-member group met regularly to discuss additional figures. The project can therefore be seen as a socio-cultural contribution to village life, as well as an outstanding artistic endeavour.

In 2000, the artisans achieved their goal. The large nativity figures were given a home in a wooden stable at the Iman sports centre in the village centre of Santa Cristina Valgardena. The nativity scene continues to be expanded. Thanks to its dimensions, this freely accessible local masterpiece is considered the largest hand-carved nativity scene in the world.
