This special autumn market has become a tradition and a popular festival over the years
Traditionally, the "Segra Sacun" market takes place every year on the day after the church consecration festival in San Giacomo, a hamlet of Ortisei. Every year, on the second Sunday of October, the villagers attend holy mass for the consecration festival in the small St. Jacob's Church, the oldest one in the valley, known in Ladin as Dlieja da Sacun.
The following Monday, the traditional "Segra Sacun" market is held in the village centre of Ortisei, known for its idyllic setting with St. Anthony's Church and as the "most beautiful shopping street in the Dolomites". It is called Blättermarkt in German. On this day, the village fills with numerous stalls offering culinary delicacies and handmade crafts. Restaurants serve local dishes.
Furthermore, an old custom is revived at the market: Young men wishing to marry buy a carved pear at the market, in keeping with the tradition of Val Gardena woodcarving, decorate it with a ribbon, and give it to their chosen one. At Easter the following year, the woman gives the young man Easter eggs in return. However, he must collect them himself to finally win her over.
The Autumn Market "Segra Sacun" in Ortisei is still celebrated with great enthusiasm by the locals today. This day is therefore a great opportunity for you to delve into the valley's history, admire the magnificent Val Gardena traditional costumes, and taste local specialities.
