Parish Church of Selva Gardena

The parish church of Mary, Help of Christians, took on its current, octagonal form in the 1980s

Although the Parish Church of Selva Gardena had only stood in the village for about 100 years, calls for a new building grew louder in the 1970s. This was prompted by the increasing number of residents and visitors, as well as the pilgrims who continued to journey to the church.

For the construction of the new parish church, even the town hall and the Via Nives road had to be relocated. The 19th-century neo-Gothic nave was demolished, and an octagonal building has stood in its place since 1988. The 17th-century chancel was preserved, featuring the miraculous image by Lucas Cranach the Younger, a significant Renaissance painter. He originally painted the image in 1537 for the Church of the Holy Cross in Dresden.

On the outer wall of the sacristy, a Wolkenstein coat of arms commemorates Wilhelm von Wolkenstein, who had the first Maria Hilf chapel built on the present site of the parish church as early as 1503. The name "Maria Hilf" refers to the invocation "Mary, Help of Christians" (Sancta Maria, auxilium christianorum in Latin), used in the veneration of the Mother of God.

Today's parish church (Ladin: Pluania de Selva) replaced this small chapel, which saw many pilgrims come and go over the centuries.
