On the Juac Alp above Selva Gardena, a popular destination in the summer months, stands a special work of art. The Val Gardena artist Roland Moroder has installed a sundial here in the middle of a large meadow that counts all the sunny hours, of which there is certainly no shortage in this magnificent Dolomite world. On the alpine meadows at 1,903 metres above sea level, a cone stands surrounded by a circle - an oversized work from which the time can be read.
Together with his brother Simon, Roland Moroder has been designing sundials for 35 years: 24 examples are in their garden, and they have attached others to the façades of houses. While a sundial by Simon Moroder on the Monte Pana shows the true local time of 60 world cities, Roland Moroder has erected his work of art on the Juac Alm on the western side of the Monte Stevia.
The sundial can be reached on an easy walk from Selva Gardena. Starting from the hamlet of Daunëi (1,675 m a.s.l.), you can reach the alp via path no. 3 in half an hour.
It is located on the edge of the Puez-Odle Nature Park, and the hut invites you to stop for a rest during the warm months and in winter from Christmas onwards. If you wish to continue walking, the path leads on to the Stevia Hut and back via the Firenze Hut, offering impressive views.
