The oldest prehistoric findings of the Dolomites

Still today we don't know much about early history in the Dolomites. Some findings let presume that early settlements characterised the area, but how the people of those days lived and who they were is difficult to say.

Years ago, archaeological excavations slightly beneath Passo Gardena were carried out and some tools and equipment were found dating back to primeval times. Geologists estimate that they originate in a time 6000 years before Christ. The findings are definitely the oldest prehistoric ones all over the Dolomites. Further findings are believed to date back to the La Tene era.

In Ortisei, some bronze fibulae, iron axes, jewellery, Gallic long swords and primitive farming tools were found. Experts estimate that they originate in a time 400 years before Christ.
